Cam Chain Revisited
Its Throwback Thursday , no better time to revisit the Cam Chain
From the beginning of my love for all thing petrol powered, the voodoo of camshafts and all related was
something i just kind of accepted as magic. magicians understand it, i dont, if it aint broke dont fuck with
it..
Fast Forward many many years, and i finally put my mind at work to understand this sorcery, a big jump
in my understandings came from wisdom passed on by Randy Callicoat.
Today i still have alot to learn, but i want to share what i learn because it has made a impact on my bike
life and hope it does for you too.
These videos apply mostly to the popular 2003-2006 Kawasaki ZX6R, but the general concept applys
to most sportbikes.
Your cam chain keeps your crankshaft and camshafts spinning at the same speeds, which keeps your
pistons and your valves moving in synchronicity. This timing is a huge part of keeping your engine at
peak performance. If your timing is off , you risk the possibility of your valve hitting your piston, All bad.
The old stunter school of thought is, when your cam chain makes noise, just tighten it more. Well turns
out when your cam chain stretches your cams rotate out of proper timing and you lose performance
and risk the chance of damaging your engine.
The bikes we are talking about are 13 years old, especially with stunt abuse, if your bike has higher miles
you probly need to swap your cam chain.
You can use a manual cam chain tensioner, but we have come to the conclusion the oem tensioner has
the proper tension for a good chain, so thats what i use now.
here are the videos, if you have any questions feel free to message or email me , thanks for watching
